What is Passive House?

Passive House is a rigorous, performance-based building standard that delivers healthy, comfortable and highly energy-efficient buildings. It takes a fabric-first approach: the design, building envelope and services work together to reduce unwanted heat flow, control air movement and provide reliable fresh air. It is not an architectural style or a particular product—it is a whole-building system that is modelled, detailed, tested and verified.

Passive House and passive design are not the same

Passive design works with the local climate through orientation, shading, glazing and natural ventilation. These ideas can support a Passive House, but the Passive House standard goes further by setting measurable performance targets for the complete building.

How the principles work together

No single product creates a Passive House. Insulation, airtightness, windows, thermal-bridge-free detailing and ventilation must be designed and delivered as one coordinated system. Good results begin early, with the client, architect, Passive House consultant and builder working together before key decisions are locked in.

Daniel Sissins is both a Passive House Designer and Passive House Tradesperson. That combination connects the performance intent established through design and modelling with the practical detailing, sequencing and quality control required on site.

Certification or principles?

Certification or principles?

A Certified Passive House follows a formal quality-assurance pathway, including energy modelling, documentation, testing and independent verification. Where formal certification is not part of the brief, Passive House principles can still guide better decisions—but the project should only be described as certified when it has completed the certification process.
